Who We Are

The Committee is a multi-agency, community-government partnership funded under the Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI) of the government  of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Committee Against Violence seeks long-term solutions to the plight of violence experienced by women, children, seniors, individuals living with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups in our communities. Our Board consists of 12 members, with representation from the following agencies:
•   Central Health Authority •   Victim Services
•   Public Health   RCMP
•   Crime Prevention Committee •   Interested Community Members
•   Status of Women Central •   Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation
•   Human Resources Labour and Employment •   Cara Transition House
•   Nova Central School Board

Mandate
•   Provide education and public awareness on issues relating to violence
•   Support existing and new anti-violence services for survivors and offenders
•   Coordinate inter-agency programs and initiatives that address issues of violence and abuse

Services/Programs
The Central-West Committee Against Violence Inc. is a non-profit, volunteer organization,
formed in 1991 to provide education, awareness and training on violence to the public; act
as advocates for victims; and provide victims with
support, safety planning, and referrals to
appropriate agencies. In addition, we provide various resources to interested organizations and
 individuals throughout the province.

People We Serve
Our committee serves communities in Central West Newfoundland (from Norris Arm North to the Baie Verte
Peninsula and all points in between). We believe that the social and cultural roots of violence are based
on inequality.  While women, children and the elderly are more likely to be victims of violence, factors
such as disability, sexual orientation, economic status or racial origin can place them at even higher risk.
Without unconditional acceptance and support, the risk of violence for these people will not be decreased.
We believe that violence is a choice and is preventable; there is strong evidence that effective
intervention can reduce and prevent violence.

Funding
Although, we are funded under the Violence Prevention Initiative,
the following government partners provide in-kind services, such as:  Central Health Authority- Health & Community Services and Newfoundland & Labrador Housing Corporation. We also pursue various funding programs to carry out a variety of anti-violence projects.
