Achievements and Events
T
he following provides a sampling of our achievements in the area of violence prevention:

Resources

The following resources were developed by our organization as a means of providing education and awareness on violence and information for survivors of violence:

Victim Information Packet for Service Providers
These packets contain various information and resources for victims of violence.  They were developed to disperse to service providers, such as doctors, RCMP, hospitals and health care offices throughout the Central region.

Published Storybook on Bullying (English and French version)
This storybook, created by the committee, was released in English in 2002 and French in 2005 to address bullying among primary and pre-school students. To accompany this resource the committee launched a poster in 2003.  Both the book and the poster are used in schools across Canada.

Comprehensive Education Presentations
Educational Presentations were developed and are revised and maintained regularly.  They are used to educate and train people in violence awareness and prevention in communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. They are shared with other anti-violence/like-minded groups and consist of a comprehensive presentation on each of the following:
•   Sexual Assault (includes date rape and date rape drugs) •   Woman Abuse
•   Abuse of Individuals with Disabilities •   Women & HIV
•   Dating Violence (includes healthy relationships) •   Workplace Harassment
•   Family Violence •   Bullying - Three focuses- Students, Parents,

Sponsored a Play on Family Violence

In 1998 and 2005, the committee sponsored the play Broken Hearts & Broken Homes.  This play, written and directed by local playwright Shirley Morrow, explores the lives of teenagers living in homes where substance abuse and family violence are considered the norm. Although the script portrays the often graphic and dramatic issues of family violence, it delivers a sense of hope and encourages families to seek help. To date, Broken Hearts & Broken Homes has reached more than 8000 school children throughout the Central region and has previously won the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts and Letters Competition for Senior Dramatic Script.

Work-Term Placements
We provide program related work-term placements for students of post-secondary institutions.

Status of Women’s Council
In March 1999 we received funding to form a Status of Women’s Council. This council was formed and the doors of the Women’s Centre opened in 2002.

Co-facilitated Groups for Survivors of Violence
In partnership with Health and Community Services employees,  the Committee organized and conducted two groups:
    1) A 16-week group for women who were survivors of childhood sexual assault
    2) An 8-week group for women of children affected by domestic violence

Facilitated a Support Group for Women Affected by Family Violence

This group operated in the 90’s and reached approximately 200 victims of violence.

Quest for Justice
Organized and took part in a nation-wide protest to allow victims of violence the right to be present at parole hearings
